CORPORATE CORRUPTION
Citigroup is a notorious backer of destructive oil and gas projects around the world. As the number one funder of oil development, Citi is responsible for the destruction of fragile ecosystems, the displacement of indigenous peoples and accelerating the global warming climate crisis.
Citi(Citigroup) is the financial advisor to the infamous Camisea Gas project in the Peruvian Amazon. This project which is set to begin construction in the coming months will devastate the Lower Urubamba River Valley. This pristine area has been cited by the Smithsonian Institute as one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet, a site of unparalleled ecological significance which must be protected. The region is also the ancestral homeland of several virtually uncontacted indigenous(Indian) communities who continue to live in voluntary isolation. If gas development is brought to the area as Citibank plans, both the native peoples and the local ecosystems will be destroyed.
An Environmental Impact Assessment report found that the project’s socio-cultural impacts could include loss of food resources, contamination of drinking water, loss or damage to archeological sites, changes to existing economic activity, and the spread of disease. There will be immense immoral environmental and social destruction beyond repair including eliminating more precious rainforest, extinction of plants and animals, water and soil contamination, territorial land loss for the Indians, diseases, and poisoning of the water and fish. This will be the total desecration and destruction of God’s creative and beautiful world and its people. When the planet dies, so will all the people, including the rich and powerful.
As the financial advisor, Citigroup has the ability to pull out of this project and at the very least, set very strong social and environmental standards. All this immoral destruction and death for the sake of profit, riches, and greed, which has already become their idol, their god which they worship above all else in the world. All the while the rich and powerful in the White House and Congress sit idly by doing absolutely nothing. Corporations like Enron and Citibank are protected by our government. Americans continue to walk around in amazement at why other countries and peoples dislike the United States policies, it is not because of us ordinary, hardworking, caring, loving, and generous citizens, it is because of our many countless government officials and corporations like Enron and Citibank.
We must educate Citigroup customers, alert the media and tell Citi to stop funding destruction around the world. So, join the national campaign against Citigroup and cut up your Citibank credit cards to immediately end its involvement in the Camisea project.
